Dear Gerard Jones, On Nan Talese's behalf when she's away, I check her email from time to time and saw your note and attached review. Before we can move ahead, I need a little more information about both yourself and the proposed submission. Are you the agent or the author of GINNY GOOD? Are you an aquaintance of Ms. Talese? Please let me know. Thanks, with best wishes, Lorna Owen, Assistant Editor, NAN A. TALESE/ DOUBLEDAYDear Lorna, I'm the author. I'm not an aquaintance of Ms. Talese. I've liked reading books she's edited. I'd love either of you to take a look at the book I've proposed. Here's a sample chapter. Thanks again. Gerard JonesDear Gerard, Thanks for your kind note. We appreciate your interest in the imprint; unfortunately, we are not able to review works by writers without representation, because we're so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of submissions. We strongly feel the best way for your work to find a home is through a good literary agent who could come to your project with a knowledge of which editors would be best able to publish your book well. For example our imprint publishes mainly literary fiction and literary biographies. You might find helpful the website:http://www.authorlink.comBest wishes on your project, Sincerely, Lorna OwenDear Lorna, Thanks for your kind note. I know your imprint publishes mainly literary fiction and literary biographies, that's why I picked you to take a look at my book. It's the best of both of those things. Try doing things a little differently just for a change of pace on occasion. It's a truly unique and worthwhile project. I've included another sample chapter, and won't pursue it beyond this. Thanks again. Gerard Jones

GINNY GOODDear Gerard, Oh, well. I'm sorry. This has absolutely wonderful stuff throughout. It's funny, energetic, entirely original, often affecting in a strange way. But I found it too intermittently wonderful...uneven...and while that might be a problem (if it is one) fixable by, susceptible to editing, I'm afraid I also felt that after about sixty pages, the kind of urgency I was hoping would develop didn't seem to be developing. And indeed it goes on that way...at least for me. I didn't feel pulled through the peregrinations strongly enough. There's an episodicness which forces the book to rely on its generally riffflike nature. And, as I've said, I didn't find the riffs consistently strong enough to sustain the somewhat atomic structure. I'm sorry. It's much better than 99% of what I see, and I appreciate the chance to consider it. I hope I'm wrong, and I hope even more that you'll be able to place it elsewhere.Dear Dan: I got your note. The only parts I understood were the parts about how wonderful it was. You lost me when you had to resort to combining jazz ostinatos with subatomic particle theory in order to explain why you're not going to publish the thing. Gary Fisketjon dissed it too, but with considerably less effusiveness. I appreciated what I was able to understand of your effusiveness, too; don't think I didn't. I also appreciated your having turned Chris Knutsen on to the book. I sent it to him. Feel free to turn it on to anyone you want--like maybe an agent or two. While it's true that I'm having a hell of a time trying to peddle the thing myself (see attachments), it's also true that the way things are set up a person probably does, in the end, much as I would like to think otherwise, need a professional peddler to do his peddling for him. Thanks again.ASTRAL WEEKEND (OWMM)Send me fifty, at least to start with. Thanks. You got it. Thanks. G.Dear Gerard Jones, OPRAH WIMSFREE & THE MAYONNAISE MAN isn't going to be right for me. I admired it in almost every way, but the tough-gal characterization seemed to me a little relentless after a while (though I'm guessing it may get modified as the book goes on). I think another editor might go for this, however, and because I do, I wonder if you would allow me to give these fifty-four pages to a very good agent I know, a guy named David McCormick who represents a lot of extremely good writers, including some novelists of whom these pages remind me a little. I can send the pages to him directly, if you like, or if you want, you can talk to David first or submit the pages directly to him. Let me know how (and whether) you want to proceed. I'm sorry not to be able to make an offer myself, I thank you for the chance to see this accomplished and funny writing, and I wish you luck. Sincerely, Dan MenakerDear Dan: You've really been cool with me. Thanks. Her character gets way modified, yes. She falls apart and gets put back together again worse than Humpty Dumpty. Absolutely, sure about David McCormick. He's at IMG, right? Anyone who edited the Ultimate Golf Book is okay by me. Give him a heads up & I'll send him a bigger chunk or send him what you have, whatever you think's best. Thanks again and again. G.McCormick has his own (already quite successful) agency now, Collins McCormick, having left IMG a couple of months ago or so. Why don't you email him and ask him how he wants to handle this manuscript (and mention the golf common denominator, by all means)? I've given him a heads-up already, and he has said he'd like to see the work. Good luck. DanWill do. Thanks again. G.You're welcome. And good luck. You're a good writer. I hope to rue the day I didn't make an offer.

Okay, I'll bite. Please send your manuscript to my attention at the address above, Maildrop 21-2 (and indicate whether you want me to return it). Sincerely, Leyla AkerThanks for biting. No, I don't want you to return the enclosed, I want you to publish it, preferably before Christmas. I want to see it at news stands in airports by New Year's Day. All our sparkling wit aside, I do very much appreciate your taking the time to read the thing. It's kind of a bitch getting people to read stuff. Thanks again. G.I think that your book has a lot of merit, but unfortunately, I'm going to pass on it. I found it entertaining and excruciatingly honest, funny and tragic, but find no compelling reason to publish it. I don't mean that to be as harsh as it probably sounds. One of the sad facts about this business is that we can't publish everything that we like or even everything that's good, and although your story is interesting, there's a lot of interesting life stories out there. The other problem is that Dead Ginny reads very much like a confession, or therapy session, or exorcism; it demands a lot of the reader and I'm not sure how much it gives back. Anyway, I appreciate you sending it to me and wish you the best of luck.ur book has a lot of merit. I found it entertaining and excruciatingly honest, funny and tragic, but find no compelling reason to publish it. Sincerely, Leyla AkerIt's not often that a person gets dissed with such high praise. The only thing I found missing in your note was a compelling reason not to publish the son of a bitch: "A lot of merit. Entertaining. Excruciatingly honest, funny and tragic. Good. Interesting. Demands a lot of the reader." The only thing you're "not sure" of is how much it gives back. What more can a book give than to have merit, be entertaining, achieve excruciating honesty, humor and tragedy, be good, be interesting and be demanding? I can name you nine million books Alfred A. Knopf has published that have given back less. I'm not ragging on you, you're a sweetheart to have read the thing in the first place, I just think you might have gotten a second opinion—it's really a seriously good and novel book. Nor is it too late to get a second opinion. I'll be happy to send it to whoever else around there you might want me to send it to. If that person says it sucks I'll be grateful to you all over again. If they love it, hey, you'll be a hero. Thanks a fourth time.

John Duff.Dear Mr. Duff: I said I was "putting together a book and a website which will include all the pertinent information I can find about Everyone Who's Anyone in Adult Trade Publishing in the US, UK and Canada." Then I asked you, "Is there anything you'd especially like included about you or your interests or your company?" You said what you said, which was basically a reiteration of the information on the Penguin-Putnam website. Hillery Borton
hborton@penguinputnam.com*
Dear Mr. Jones: I very much enjoyed the freshness of your work, however, I find that there are two kinds of writers, those that want to write and those that need to write. If your story is as thinly disguised as I suspect, Mr. Jones, then you are one of the latter, and I count you in good company. Those who want to write, generally, want to be published and rewarded for their efforts. Those who need to write are primarily concerned with the product of their labors, recognition being an afterthought. In light of the current hard cover fiction market, I see no way in which your work will be published in its current state. Whether or not you wish to subscribe to the parameters of popular fiction in order to alter the fate of your work is up to you. In the end, you may be happier with the job at McDonald's. Warm regards, Hillery BortonDear Ms. Borton: You apparently want popular fiction to continue to be fatuous, formulaic and stupid. Why? Why not give people a chance to read something fresh and true? Something entertaining and honest and funny and tragic? You sound like someone with some integrity. Why, then, wouldn't you rather work at McDonald's than continue to promote the fatuous, formulaic claptrap and crap that passes itself off as popular fiction? Thanks for your warm regards. Gerard JonesDear Hillery: I got a letter from Seva Gunitskiy dated 7/31/01 which said: "Gerard, Go ahead and send the rest of the GINNY GOOD manuscript, but address it either to myself or to Hillery Borton, Putnam Editor. Best, Seva." I sent the manuscript in, addressed to both you and Seva, and haven't heard anything from either of you. It's been over a year. What's up with it? Thanks. Gerard JonesOut of office auto reply: Hillery Borton no longer works at Penguin-Putnam.

Dear Mr. Jones, At least 4 S&S execs have forwarded your query to me. Please direct all your information gathering towards this office, and we will decide the extent of our participation. Thanks, Adam RothbergDear Mr. Rothberg: I've already directed all the queries I'm going to direct to those editors and S&S executives I was able to identify. My letter was self-explanatory. Those who wish to include comments about himself or herself and/or his or her interests are welcome to do so and I will faithfully and accurately record those comments on the website and in the book. Those who do not wish to respond will not respond and that will be their response. When and if I identify other S&S editors or executives, I will send them a similar query and get whatever response or lack of response I may get. It's not that big a deal. If an editor or executive doesn't have anything to say it seems simple enough to me to just not say anything. Thanks. G.

Deirdre Dore, Assistant Editor, Pocket BooksDear Deirdre: Tell your boss, Lauren McKenna, I said thanks--her bio was perfect; succinct; just right. Say something about yourself and I'll put you in there too. Thanks again. G.Lauren McKenna started her publishing career at Pocket Books and has been there for the past six years. During that time she has worked on almost every aspect of mass-market publishing, including Romance, Westerns, Thrillers, Horror, Erotica, General Fiction, and even some Non-Fiction, especially pop-culture. She is always looking for new names and is especially excited about working on MTV Books and Pocket's new Downtown Press line. Some of her current projects include sexy Regency historical romances by Liz Carlyle, a non-fiction travel and biography guide to music's 'late and great' called Tombstone Tourists, a new fiction series based on the hit show Queer As Folk, the Sex & the City companion book, the Osbournes companion book, and much more.

I don't accept unsolicited email submissions. The vast majority of editors don't even respond to unsolicited email submissions. Thanks. G.So don't send them. It's the moral equivalent of spam. My two cents: get an agent.I like sending them. The publishing industry is the moral equivalent of incest. I've got two books, one fiction and one nonfiction, both of which are better than anything Simon & Schuster has published in the last ten years. Here's the sort of thing agents say. This is from Jody Rein: "I hope you find an agent who understands this book better than I do, and can help you find an enthusiastic publisher. You're a terrific and imaginative writer. Maybe you ought to go straight to Farrar Strauss or Knopf or Susan Kamil at The Dial Press and let the dense agents of more linear and transparent literature be damned." Thanks again. G.Who are you? You must be a virus. I'm deleting your first email. Identify yourself or to hell with your spam.Dear Mitchell: I'm not a virus. Don't be silly. Go read what people say about this website:http://everyonewhosanyone.com/press.htmlThen stick your name in any of the little search thingies scattered about and all will be revealed to you as if by magic. Thanks again. G.It may not be a virus but it's still SCAM. Can't wait till this is illegal. What, pray tell, could possibly be a scam about it? I've come up with a better alternative than the LMP (which costs $389 a year) and I'm giving it away for free. Golly gee. What a scam. It's gotta be a communist plot. Somebody did something nice for a change. The world's gonna fall apart. Or maybe you meant SPAM. Nope. Not that either. Just celebrating the American tradition of free speech and a free press, cracking myself up and providing some insight into the minds of an editor or two at a bunch of big publishing companies. Now, is there anything about yourself or your job that you would like to say? G.Nope.Thot not. G.

Though your writing effectively captures the chaos and color of the times, I'm afraid I just didn't find myself connecting with the characters. They all seem so fey and mercurial (with the exception of Elliot) that they're a bit hard to understand. There's also a lot of incidental material, e.g. brushes with fame: Gordon Lish, Cassady, etc. that tends to distract from the main story. Bob Bender

i'd love to see owmm. thanks for remembering. i look forward to the read.Look for it sometime next week. Thanks. Gerard JonesDear Sally: After reading a synopsis, you said you would "love" to see and that you were "looking forward to reading" the above-referenced novel. I sent it to you. Chris Holder returned it to me, unread, along with an enigmatic note about agents. Can't you read whatever you want to read? I'll tell you what. I'll send it to you again. It's gotten even better in the last month and a half. You have any editor, assistant editor, proof reader or unpaid intern read the thing and if he or she doesn't agree that it's better than any book St. Martin's has ever published, I won't trouble you with anything that's not represented by an agent. How about that? What have you got to lose? Not much. What have you got to gain? A lot. Thanks. Gerard Jones.Oh, ps, by the way, I have a narrative non-fiction account of the woman who is documented to have been the first hippie in Haight-Ashbury, available through an agent. Thanks again. G.Mr. Jones, Sally is on vacation, but she asked me to return your manuscript. She gets many queries and in this case, got you confused with someone else. She asked if we had ever seen anything of yours and I explained that you had sent manuscripts in but I always wrote explaining the company policy (all submissions must come through a legitimate literary agent). So good luck to you. Chris Holder, Sally's assistantChris, Just for the record, I never sent you a manuscript prior to this and therefore you never wrote to me explaining the company policy. Wouldn't it be cool to find the best, most widely read book St. Martin's ever published, by accident? How about asking Sally to take a look at it when she gets back from vacation? What the heck? Think outside the lines. She'll thank you. You'll be a hero. The thing's going to sell a million copies. You'll be famous. Ha! Thanks again. G.Mr. Jones, You have submitted to us at least twice before and I've written you our policy on those occasions. And if you never received or kept those letters, you now know what the policy is...agent submissions only. If you have that much faith in your writing, you should be able to get an agent. And you will need an agent to submit to any major publisher. I'm sorry. I know it's frustrating but I do wish you luck. ChrisDear Chris: I know for a total fact I never sent the nonfiction piece to anyone. I turned it over to the agent I mentioned. What she's done with it I do not know, although I'm sure she'd be happy to send it to you. This manuscript, however, I decided to have some fun with and sent out a few query letters on my own. Sally said she wanted to see it. I have no idea why. I took her at her word and sent it to her. Leslie Gelbman asked to see it too. I also have no idea why, but I sent it to her as well. Some agent named Jody Rein had this to say: "What an original romp, though. I hope you find an agnet who understands this book better than I do, and can help you find an enthusiastic publisher. You're a terrific and imaginative writer. Maybe you ought to go straight to Farrar Strauss or Knopf or Susan Kamil at The Dial Press and let the dense agents of more linear and transparent literature be damned." Serendipity's fun. How cool would it be if you guys just broke down and took a look at the thing and it turned out to be all that I say it is? I'm telling you, this book will sell more copies than any book St. Martin's ever published. Wouldn't that be sort of slick? I still simply do not see what you or Sally has to lose by having someone read the thing. Thanks. G.Mr. Jones, You are a riot. If you have an agent, have her send to me. If you do not have an agent and you send your manuscript, it will be returned to you with yet another letter stating our company policy. Happy Fourth of July! ChrisChris, Did I mention Pulitzer Prize? National Book Award? Is that Booker thing open to Americans yet? Okay, if it is, throw Booker Prize in there too. I'll have my agent send you GINNY GOOD. We can do a two book deal. You can be the first publishing house to have the same author win all those prizes for both fiction and nonfiction in the same year. Ha! Happy Fourth of July to you too. G.Gerry (can I call you Gerry?), If you had an agent this whole time, why did you torture me?Chris, Totally call me Gerry, sure. Or Ger. Or G. I don't have an agent for THIS book. I have an agent for the other book. I wanted to try selling this book on my own 'cause I like to try to do impossible things. Do you want me to have my agent send you the other book? Sorry about the torture, but I wasn't being duplicitous in any way. They're both extraordinarily good books. One has an agent. The other doesn't. Does that make sense? Thanks. G.Hi Gerry. Sally would prefer not to be listed in your book. She appreciates it, but we are listed in the Literary Market Partners and that is fine for her and St. Martin's. And if you want your agent to send us your manuscript, that is fine. But only if it comes through an agent, per our submission policy. Remember? Take care. ChrisHey, Chris: I so remember your submission policy, yes; boy, do I ever. It's branded into my forehead backwards so I can read it in the mirror every morning. Thanks. G.

Dear Gerald, Charles Spicer asked me to email you with regards to seeing the fiction ms. listed below. You can send it to Charles Spicer, Executive Editor, 175 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10010. Thank you. Best, Joshua Rivkin, Assistant EditorDear Joshua: Okey dokey, look for it toward the end of the week. Thanks. G.Dear Charles: In an email, Joshua Rivkin said you wanted to see the above-referenced novel. Here it is. The cool thing about you asking to see it is that Eric Simonoff at Janklow & Nesbit mentioned that Steven J. Cannell was one of his clients and I based this whole huge book in Rockford, Illinois and gave the main character a Firebird because my father and I used to watch The Rockford Files together. You will notice that some chapters have a different title. That's because I'm redoing the whole thing and didn't want to print the whole thing out again until I've finished the final edit. You should be able to get a pretty good idea from this whether you want to pursue it or not. I'm also sending it to Richard Morris at J&L, but have no idea whether he's going to want to represent it. He's liked what he's seen so far, however. Thanks again. Gerard JonesUpdates:Oh, and, Charles, ps, by the way, six months ago, at your request, I sent you a copy of ASTRAL WEEKEND. Have you read it yet? Do you want to make an offer on it? Six months is quite awhile, but if you need more time to decide perhaps you could give me a sort of interim status report. Thanks. G.I'm still waiting to hear from you regarding the book you asked me to send you a year ago. Any news yet? Doesn't it seem a trifle rude to ignore one polite request after another for over a year? It does to me. Thanks again. G.Dear Mr. Jones: Charles Spicer asked me to write to you regarding ASTRAL WEEKEND. Many thanks for letting us see it! Unfortunately, while the story is interesting and very well written, this project just isn't right for our list at this time. I'm returning it herewith. Thanks again for letting us see this, and best of luck selling it elsewhere! Regards, Dan Rosenberg, Editorial AssistantDear Charles: One of your assistants finally returned ASTRAL WEEKEND after thirteen months. Thanks! I'm surprised and honored that the guy who edits Stephen Coonts thought my work was interesting and very well written! That's high praise indeed! I also very much appreciate that it took so long to decide that the project wasn't right for your list at this time, but take heart! During the thirteen months you had the manuscript I've made some changes which are sure to meet with you approval! In the newer version Amy Fisher, Susan Smith and Andrea Yates form a cyberspace sex cult and worship...guess who? Robert Blake! Ha! How about them apples? Wanna see it? Better hurry, though; I don't think it's gonna be available for another thirteen months. Great editors have a way of discerning great literature when they see it. In fifty years your great-grandchildren will remember you with pride as the guy who bought one of the books I wrote. Unfortunately, if you don't buy it, they won't remember you at all. Thanks again! All best! G.

Sorry. Probably not for me. But if you're going to send queries by e-mail, most editors want to know who you are and what you've published. CHSProbably not for you? Want me to send you a couple chapters so you can be sure? Take a flyer, what the heck. Thanks. G.First, who are you?My name is Gerard Jones. You read an earlier book of mine which is now with an agent. You liked it. Here's the first chapter of the current book. Judge for yourself who I am. Thanks. G.AW SynopsisNice and peppy, but not for me. If you have an agent, you should be submitting through him/her. I hope you realize there would be hefty permissions for the lyrics. Your word discrete should actually be discreet. Good luck [Smith, Carol]Wow. You are sooo right about discreet. I'm amazed. Thank you. Bet you can't find any other thing wrong with the whole manuscript. Wanna bet? Thanks. G.

Amy Cherry
acherry@wwnorton.com
I am not going to make an offer to publish GINNY GOOD. There are times when your manuscript feels dead accurate to the times you describe, and some of it is truly quite funny. But the tone of the manuscript gets a bit wearing after awhile. There's a whine underneath the writing that keeps the reader from fully indulging in the work. Amy CherryNot for me, especially as I'm cutting way back on the amount of fiction I acquire. Amy CherryOkey dokey, anyone else around there I should send it to? Thanks. G.Doesn't seem like a Norton book. Can't think of an editor here for it. Amy Cherry

I'd look at the masterpiece if it is a masterpiece, antonDear Anton: It's a total masterpiece. I'm sending it today to Fred Ramey, Charles Spicer and Richard Morris at Janklow & Nesbit. It's gonna be a tricky book to publish however. The main character has a fantasy during a seizure caused by a giant brain aneurysm which includes Oprah Winfrey. People are afraid of offending her. If you want to see a little of my literary roots, here's an old version of another book I wrote: Oops, forget it, got sold, but you can still check it out here:GG SynopsisHere's a synopsis of the new book. It's called ASTRAL WEEKEND. If you still want to see it after you've read the synopsis, let me know and I'll get another copy made today. Thanks. G.AW SynopsisDear Anton: Wow. Dear Mr. Jones: Thanks very much for letting me know about your web site, which I've bookmarked. It was especially instructive to see such an endlessly inventive and lively display of rejection letters. Mine had become rather stale and your site was a real wake-up call. You generally have to be a recognized academic or journalist to publish with Basic Books. We do no fiction (at least not intentionally), though our sister imprint, Counterpoint, does. My own publishing has concentrated in science, economics, law, politics, and international relations. We accept unagented proposals now and then but the author's credentials have to be very good. With best wishes, Bill FruchtDear Bill: I wish everyone in the whole world was exactly like you--charming, candid, informative. Phew. Stevie Smith had a poem where she kept talking about a breath of fresh air. Thanks. G.Dear Gerard: Thanks for your note. I like my comment just the way it is (and am flattered by your posted response). Best wishes, Bill FruchtDear Bill: Thanks. I've started an international good guy movement: "Why can't everyone be just like Bill Frucht?" It's already all the rage in Tibet. G.Dear Gerard: Good to hear from you again. I continue to use your site regularly. It's especially useful for reaching agents who don't bother to put their e-mail addresses on their stationery. The agent listing, by the way, seems to be stronger for fiction than for nonfiction—not surprising given its origin. Some of my favorite people in the agenting world (I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but let it pass) are not here: Susan Rabiner, Rafe Sagalyn, and the Garamond Agency, for instance, all seem to be missing. Congratulations on Ginny Good. I've ordered it from Amazon. Best wishes, BillHey, Bill, Rabiner, Sagalyn & Garamond are all on this page:http://everyonewhosanyone.com/agus3.htmlDo that Cntrl+F thing on that page and type in their names and you go right to them, or use the search thingy at the top of any page for anyone else you're looking for. Glad you got my little book at Amazon. It's totally cheap there now—they'll probably raise the price pretty soon. Hope you like it. Hey, it's nonfiction, by the way, narrative nonfiction, actually, that's what the Library of Congress says. Who am I to disagree? Thanks. G.

Gerard, what an amusing website, so expressive of editors' deep fear of being sucked under by a tidal wave of crap submissions, which may inspire their overwhelmed and bored assistants to resign, whereupon their company will seize the opportunity to reduce headcount. I deeply sympathize. PublicAffairs is a nonfiction publisher specializing in works of journalism, history, biography, memoir, and social criticism, most often by people who are public figures and/or have well-established journalistic credentials. Our books tend to be story-driven (as opposed to research based or service-oriented), highly publicizable, and about subjects of social, historical, cultural, or political significance. "Signature" books include Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage by Chris Drew and Sherry Sontag; The Crisis of Global Capitalism by George Soros; The Tiananmen Papers; Black Mass: The Irish Mob, the FBI, and a Devil's Deal by Gerard O'Neill and Dick Lehr; the 2002 NBCC Award finalist War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning by Chris Hedges; Washington, by Meg Greenfield; and Common Nonsense, by house author Andy Rooney. I tend to acquire fewer of the many politics-oriented books we do and more personal and "character-driven" books—such as a memoir by comedian Richard Lewis about his recovery from addiction, more literary/writerly narratives, like The Cat from Hue: A Vietnam War Story by John Laurence, and investigative journalism with new journalistic voice (Pipe Dreams: Greed, Ego, and the Death of Enron by Robert Bryce). I am also interested in the arts and environmental issues. Best of luck, LisaDear Lisa: Candid responses like yours and Bill Frucht's chuckle me out and make this little project worth doing. Thanks. Hey, I just noticed you canceled your Audio Book, COMMON NONSENSE by Andy Rooney. You should replace it with an audio version of my book, GINNY GOOD. I'll read the thing for free and my voice is easily as gravely as his voice. Seriously. My agent sold most of the other rights but she kept the audio rights. She's trying to sell them at this very moment. Send her an e-mail.Laura Strachanalacrity@ix.netcom.comYou think I'm kidding. I'm not. Oh, oh, you should also tell some of the Perseus Book Group guys to buy the rights to this website and make it into a book too. It's really the most comprehensive, up-to-date and "real" listing of all the best literary agents, editors and publishers in the known universe and beyond—in addition to which, it's environmentally safe art. No kidding. Check out the Nettle article in the Reviews Section on this page:http://everyonewhosanyone.com/wps.htmlHe says it's total art. A new form. Ha! It must be pretty recent since Alex Schwartz has been here only a few months. Anyhow, good luck. David BrentDear David: I add things serendipitously as I come across them, so this may well be the first time you've heard of or from me. I included a link to a chapter by William Germano from his book published by the University of Chicago Press, and voila. The sense it makes to me is that it's a free, easily accessible guide to the US and UK publishing industries. Some people have use for such a thing, lots of people don't. Thanks. G.

Dear Gerald Jones, Walter Zacharius has asked me to respond to your recent e-mail regarding your proposed reference work. For information about the Kensington staff, please visit our website. After you have drafted your entry for Kensington, you may send it to me for a final check, if you'd like. Regarding your books, I must say that neither of the books as you describe them sounds like a good match for our list. Since most publishers do not accept unagented submissions, I suggest you start looking for an agent. I wish you the best in finding an enthusiastic response. Thank you for your interest in Kensington. Sincerely, Michaela Hamilton, Editor in ChiefDear Michaela: Here's preliminarily what your entry will look like. When I get the project onto a website I'll let you know. I'm still fiddling with it. The comments of those agents, editors and publishers who responded to my query or who have responded to my queries in the past will be accessible by clicking a "comments" bar under his or her name. For the purposes of this email, however, I'm simply including them. So far I've identified over six hundred individual literary agents and over four hundred editors and publishers, both in the US and the UK, but it's also an ongoing project which I'm sure will, when word gets around, include more and be more valuable and more current than information contained in the Literary Market Place ($389 per year) or any of the other current guides to agents, editors and publishers. Initially I'm going to be offering access to the website at no cost--no advertising, no popups, etc.--and simply asking users to send me whatever money they may care to send.I'm also looking for a publisher who may wish to buy the rights to a companion print version which would be available in book stores or through the website. Such a companion book will be more complete, succinct, honest, useful and entertaining than any of the best selling (and quite profitable) guides which currently exist. If Kensington would be interested in acquiring the rights to such a book, let me know. Thanks again. G.

Gerard, we specialize in experimental fiction (novels and short fiction). The best place to get an idea of what we do is our website, which also has our submission guidelines. I can't tell enough from what you've said about your books (except that if one really is a memoir we're not interested in that) to know if they're aligned with our leanings. Brenda

We publish nonfiction only as for example the upcoming Power Beyond Reason which proves that President Johnson while in office was a manic-depressive paranoiac—and his disease kept us in the war in Vietnam and cost thousands of American lives... —lyle stuartDear Lyle: Sounds like a good, eminently believable, book, but let's not forget the two million Vietnamese lives it cost as well. Thanks again. G.

Carole Stuart
cstuart@barricadebooks.com
Dear Gerard Jones: How come I'm not in your directory? I'm Carole Stuart, publisher of Barricade Books and Lyle Stuart is President. If you want more information, let me know and I'll send it. You do want to be completely up to date, right? We've been publishing for nearly 13 years! Carole StuartDear Carole: I had you in there at first, but I couldn't find an e-mail address for you, so I took you out. Anything you want to say I'd be more than happy to put in, sure, as little or as much. Thanks again. G.I'll look it over...I like the information—very helpful. CaroleThanks. Take your time. Hey, your mission is the furtherance of free speech. So is mine. Ha! G.Yes and it's caused us a lot of expensive grief. (See Steve Wynn v. Barricade Books and v. Lyle Stuart.) Anyway....Wow. Oh, thank heaven for actual malice, but I'm sure it cost you a pretty penny nonetheless. Tricky business, this truth telling. The best thing I've got going for me is that I'm judgment proof—when you got nothing you got nothing to lose. You should see what I'm doing with Oprah Winfrey. She's gonna have a cow. I'm absolutely within my rights to use her in the way I do—thanks to Larry Flynt and Jerry Falwell—but still no publisher will touch it with a ten foot pole. That's the main problem with my nonfiction book too. Here's the first couple lines:"I'm using everyone's real name. They can all sue me. I hope they do. I could use the excitement."Update May, 2003: We publish non-fiction like CONVERSATIONS WITH A PEDOPHILE and CELEBRITY LIES as well as a line of gambling books and true crime with a emphasis on mob-related subjects.

Hello. Congratulations on the sale of your book. And: I have some corrections for the Red Dress Ink entry on your site. Since we don't currently accept e-mail solicitations, I'm wondering if you could take my e-mail address off of your page. Also, perhaps you could add the following, as I've received a number of e-mail queries that would not even come close to fitting our needs. Thanks much. "Red Dress Ink was launched to provide women with unique and irreverent stories that reflect the lifestyles of today's women. Our authors keep their writing lively and lighthearted. The editorial ranges from edgy to laugh-out-loud funny, and expresses ideas and witty observations from strong, independent voices. The Red Dress Ink imprint is owned by Harlequin Enterprises Limited." All best. Farrin JacobsDear Farrin: I can't take your e-mail address off 'cause the whole thing is essentially an online directory, i.e., I don't put anyone in who doesn't have an e-mail address, but I'd be more than happy to include the information that you don't accept e-mail solicitations and perhaps you might want to tell people how you DO accept solicitations. Thanks again. G.

We're interested in expanding our "Fringe" list. We just signed Loyd Auerbach, world's number one ghost hunter for GHOSTHUNTING: HOW TO INVESTIGATE THE PARANORMAL. In this list we include UFOs, Crop Circles and Robert Anton Wilson. We're especially interested in known authors with out of print books that can be reconfigured into new shorter, multiple volumes. We're also interested in 20th Century Masters, whose work leads itself for a Ronin-type internet-age repackaging/editing. We've created several new Timothy Leary books from all writings and more to come. We also are morphing PROGRAMING THE HUMAN BIOCOMPUTER by John C. Lilly, M.D into a new 21st CENTURY style. We're also interested in known authors with out of print books that can be reconfigured for our "Life Skills with Attitude!" list. Thanks for the listing. It's super. Good luck with this. Beverly Potter, Publisher, RONINDear Beverly: The Leary stuff and Lilly stuff should be slick. Those were the days. I've got the best acid chapter ever written in my forthcoming book called GINNY GOOD. Thanks for the updates, I'll fix things. G.

Best, Dianne Helm, CEO, Helm PublishingHey, Dianne, I just found you guys a month or so ago, I have no idea where, but I noticed that you were in Rockford, IL. I've never been there, but I located one of my books in Rockford and gave the main character a Firebird to drive because of the old TV show The Rockford Files. Then I had to look at maps of the area and included the nuclear plant in Bryon. It was fun to make up a whole town, whether I got it even close to right or not, I do not know.

Thanks. G.

Charles Spicer
Executive Editor
charles.spicer@stmartins.com

Wanna bet? Thanks. G.

Amy Cherry

A new form. Ha! And if you need any help marketing any of your books, let me know. Thanks again. G.

Dear Gerard, I believe this is the first time I've heard of or from you or about EWA. The concept doesn't make a lot of sense to me and I can't imagine where you got your information, especially about the University of Chicago Press. Thanks. G.

wzacharius@kensingtonbooks.com

Lyle Stuart
lyle@barricadebooks.com

Hi Gerard, Scarlett, Oh! Publishing only publishes nudist travel books about such subjects as the Jamaican resort Hedonism II or the French all-naturist town of Cap d'Agde. Just letting you know because we receive manuscript ideas that aren't in our genre so you may want to post this information to your Section III near our name on your website. Regards, Chris Santilli, PrincipalHey, Chris, I'll say what you said. I don't want to take your company off my little list though, 'cause I like its name and I like inclusivity and I like diversity...and whimsy, and even a little hedonism here and there, like in moderation. Thanks. G.

A snail mail query, synopsis and first three CONSECUTIVE chapters to Wendy Burbank at the address listed on your site. No e-mail queries, please. Good luck with your own projects and thanks again for including us.Hey, Leslie, thanks. I'll try to encapsulate what you said but your website seems to speak for itself.
